Empowering others through education

Did your parents travel to a new country to find a better life for themselves? Meet Nadia from Feltham whose father arrived in the UK on Kindertransport as a refugee.

Nadia's motivation to join LEAH stemmed from a personal connection to her father's refugee experience and a deep desire to contribute positively to the lives of refugees, asylum seekers, and victims of modern slavery.

Driven by a sense of gratitude for the support her father received upon arriving in the UK, Nadia saw volunteering as an English tutor as a way to counteract the negative narratives surrounding refugees and vulnerable people migrating to the country.

“I see this as a way of paying back a debt, if you like, because despite the terrible loss of his parents and immediate family, he had a great life in the end, and he had tremendous help from people here.”

Nadia’s coaching and mentoring skills in arts management alongside the 6-week LEAH training course and follow-up workshops have enabled her to successfully support two students over the last year. She can see the positive impact she makes on the life of her students providing them with the skills and language to navigate their lives in a new country.

“Because being a refugee or an asylum seeker can be very, very lonely, I think it's great if they feel they've got somebody on their side.”
