Unearthing a new career

Meet Amy from Guildford, who initially worked in a garden centre but harboured dreams of becoming a teacher and sought to explore this aspiration further.

Meet Amy who joined LEAH and discovered a new career in learning. Amy had considered a career in teaching and eager to learn more and gain experience, she decided to join LEAH as a volunteer tutor.

“I was always interested in the idea of teaching English and wanted to volunteer for a charity that makes an active difference to people's lives.”

After completing a comprehensive 6-week training course, Amy felt well-prepared to provide support to a student online once a week.

“Laura [the LEAH volunteer coordinator] was so lovely during the initial chat I had with her. She made me feel at ease and that even though I didn't have any experience, I would be more than fine.”

The volunteer experience proved to be incredibly rewarding for Amy as she gained valuable teaching experience and discovered new ways to communicate effectively.

“I think my biggest achievement was watching my client go from absolute beginner (pre-entry level) to being able to communicate with me during our lessons. To start with the lessons were extremely basic (starting with the alphabet) and my client didn't really have the chance to express herself or her personality in English. However, after 6 months she had integrated more into British society and in our lessons I could see her personality appearing as her confidence and communication skills blossomed. It really was a special moment to see that I had been a part of that.”

Not only did her student’s confidence grow after volunteering for over a year Amy made the bold decision to change her career and pursue teaching English as a foreign language full time.

“I now work for a leading international summer school in their head office. From doing this, I have had the opportunities to travel and work abroad as well as all around the UK. This all started from volunteering with LEAH and realising I had a passion for teaching English/ESOL/EFL.”
